Fixing flaws – Beauty Re-Touching Tutorial

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Open the image you wish to use in Photoshop. I chose an average woman with simple flaws.

Copy the Image to another layer by pressing Command J.
Rename the Layer EDIT. (always copy the original image into a new layer so you can work on the copy, while preserving the original image)

I am going to start this re-touch by editing her teeth. Use the magnifying glass tool to zoom into her mouth.

Use the rectangular marquee tool  to select her mouth.

Select Filter > Liquify

Select the Forward Warp  tool from the tools palette on the left hand side and adjust the settings on the right to the following:

*Adjust the brush size accordingly.

Use the Forward Warp tool to straighten teeth.

Select “OK” when satisfied.
Deselect by hitting Command D.

I will now edit her nose.

Use the rectangular marquee tool  to select her nose. Be sure to leave some space around her nose.

Select Filter > Liquify

Select the squeeze tool   and adjust the settings as follows:

*Be sure the brush size is larger than the area you are trying to make smaller.

Tap the mouse to slowly squeeze the area in. If you hold the mouse in, it will squeeze very fast.
Select the Forward Warp tool   to push areas into place.

Select “Ok” when satisfied.

I will now give her a full set of lips.

Use the lasso tool  to select the full bottom lip.

Copy (command C) and Paste (command V). This will paste onto a new layer.

Rename the new layer Lip

Transform (command T) the layer and turn upside down.
Hit ALT+click and select Warp.

Warp the selection by moving the lines in the box to shape an upper lip.

Hit Enter when satisfied.

Select the eraser tool  with the following settings:

Erase around the lip to make it look more natural.

You will now need to fix the coloring.

Because the Lip was brighter, I adjusted the brightness/contrast first. To do this, select Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast

I adjust the brightness to -10.

Select the Burn tool  and select Shadows

Burn around the outside of the lip to create shadows.

Select the eraser tool   use a soft brush, set the opacity to 10%

Erase around the outside of the lip to give it a more natural realistic look.

Hit command and click in the box to select the lip.

Use the lasso tool  and select the lips.

Select the Lip layer and the EDIT layer and Merge. (right click, or ctrl click)

Use the lasso tool  and select the lips.

Select Image > Adjustments > Hue Saturation

Adjust the sliders to the shade desired. Select “OK”.

Deselect (command D)

You will now use the Filter Gallery to add some “lip gloss”

Filter > Filter Gallery

Select Artistic > Plastic Wrap
(adjust sliders to apply “gloss”)

Use the lasso tool  and select the lips.

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur

Adjust the slider to blur the image.
*I recommend a radius of 3.0 pixels

Now we will smooth her skin.

Select “ok”
Select the box in the History Pallet next to Gaussian Blur.

Then select Edit > Step Backward

Select the History Brush   use a soft edge brush, set Opacity at 15%

- You can gradually increase the opacity as needed.

Lightly brush over the skin to blur blemishes and smooth skin.

Photoshop Tutorial- Making a Larger Model Skinny – Photo Re-Touch

In this tutorial you will learn the steps to thin out a larger woman using the liquify tool and other basic tools in Photoshop CS4.

Open the photo you wish to use in Photoshop.

Photoshop Tutorial - Skinny

Copy the background layer by pressing command J.

Rename that layer Retouched Image.

(you should always work on the copied layer so you can refer to the original image)

Be sure you are working on the copied layer, and select the rectangular marquee tool.

Select the portion of the body using the marquee tool in which you would like to thin out. (again, be sure you are working on the copied layer)

Be sure to allow some space around the body where you will be liquifying.

Select FILTER from the menu bar, then select Liquify…

A new window will open that looks like this:

Select the forward Warp Tool from the pallette.

Adjust the settings on the right hand side of the window to the following:

Use the Forward Warp Tool to push in the areas you would like to thin…

Select “OK” when finished.

If you have an image like the one I chose, then the detail work may have become somewhat pixelated when warping. This is how you fix that.

Hide the Re-Touched layer by clicking on the eyeball on the left hand side of the Layer:

Select the area of detail on the original image that became pixelated on the Re-Touched Layer:

Copy (command C) and Paste (command V) the selection.  This will become a new layer in which you can name Detail. Be sure you drag the new Detail Layer above the Re-Touched Layer.

You will now transform the Detail Layer to fix the pixelated section.

Press Command T to transform. Right click inside the transform box and select Warp.

Move the points in the transform box to cover the pixelated area, and hit enter when satisfied.

Select the Details Layer and the Re-Touched Layer by holding shift and clicking on both layers. Right Click and select Merge Layers.

Now we will fix the wrinkles in the side of her stomach. Zoom in 450% on the area with the wrinkles.

Choose the eyedropper tool from the Tools palette.

Select an area about 3 pixels from the wrinkle to get the color close to the wrinkle.

Next, select the paint brush from the Tools palette.

Select the 9px soft paintbrush, and bring the opacity down to 20%.

Now paint over the wrinkled area softly with the paintbrush.

You will have to keep selecting colors around the wrinkle in order to make the skin look natural.

*Sometimes I use the clone stamp tool and paint skin from another part of the body to make it look more natural.

When you achieved the desired result, choose the Image tab, then Adjustments, then Curves.

In the curves window, select the following settings:

Channel: RGB

Output: 120

Input: 135

Select “OK”.
